Formally, Prince William Parish Church was built by William Bull in 1753. It served as the muster point for the Beaufort District Militia under General Stephen Bull, and was burned by Bull’s Tory neighbor Andrew DeVeaux in 1779. An inside crypt is the burial place of Col William Bull, a co-founder of Georgia with Oglethorpe, and it was reportedly used as a hiding place for 8,000 pounds of gunpowder confiscated from the HMS Philppa off Daufuskie Island, over half of which was later sent to General George Washington to aid in the Siege of Boston in the winter of 1775 .
