The southernmost fort in British North America from 1726 to 1758, it was initially constructed of logs, and was later improved with tabby walls, which were completed in 1733. A small fort, its garrison was a company of British regulars until they were transferred to Georgia in 1736, after which local militia units occupied it. With the completion of the 375 x 400 foot, tabby Fort Lyttleton on Spanish Point in 1762 it became obsolete.
