SUMMARY:Eliza Lucas Pinckney's Revolutionary War with Peggy Picket
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public! \nEliza Lucas Pinckney\, portrayed as a time traveler from the 18th century by experienced historical interpreter and author Peggy Pickett\, gives modern audiences her view of the American Revolution as a woman and the mother of two Continental Army officers. One of those sons\, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney\, left his plantation on Pinckney Island in her care while he was off at the Continental Congresses and fighting for independence from Great Britain. \nMargaret Pickett\, or Peggy as she prefers to be called\, is a graduate of the University of Maryland and a former teacher who spent 20 years working in museum education in Virginia’s historic triangle-Jamestown\, Williamsburg and Yorktown. In 1999 she became an independent Living History Interpreter researching and developing documented programs based on the lives of prominent 17th and 18th century Virginia women. She has presented programs attired in historical clothing reproductions and in modern clothing for the National Parks Service\, at colleges and historical organizations in both Virginia and South Carolina.

SUMMARY:A Revolutionary Lecture - Divided Loyalties of the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Like the rest of the South at the dawn of the American Revolution\, the residents of May River Neck — present-day Palmetto Bluff — were caught in the chaos of a divided nation with neighbors\, and sometimes even families\, on opposing sides. Turmoil erupted among patriots\, loyalists\, and neutral parties who refused to take a side\, fueling tensions that rippled through the colonies\, resulting in an ideological clash that turned into a bloody conflict at Palmetto Bluff. To learn about Palmetto Bluff’s surprising past and those who lived there during the Revolutionary War\, please join Palmetto Bluff Archaeologist Katie Epps for her talk on Divided Loyalties at Palmetto Bluff. \nFirst-come\, first-served and free to the public!

SUMMARY:Revolutionary War Lecture Series - COLONIAL HILTON HEAD: COMMUNITY AND CONFLICT
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Richard Thomas \nAfter the Indian wars and the rise of the indigo market in South Carolina in the 1740s\, Hilton Head Island became a growing settlement. In the years leading up to the American Revolution\, about 25 families owned and worked plantations along the island’s northern and western shores. As the population grew south of the Broad River\, so did the need for protection—militias formed\, and fortifications were built to guard against Indian raiders\, pirates\, and Spanish invaders. Many of these settlers went on to fight in the Revolution\, and several rose to national prominence in the years that followed. \nPresented in partnership with the Beaufort County 250 Committee. \nRichard Thomas is an owner and guide for Hilton Head History Tours and author of Backwater Frontier: Beaufort County\, SC at the Forefront of American History. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Revolutionary War Lecture Series - TEA AND TORTURE
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lee Wilwerding \nThe Boston Tea Party wasn’t the first protest against British policies—and it wasn’t the only one. Cities like Charleston\, Philadelphia\, Annapolis\, and Edenton\, North Carolina\, all staged dramatic acts of resistance. Edenton’s may have been the smallest\, but it caused a stir in Britain because it was organized by women. This talk also looks at the brutal tactics used by the British on American rebels\, including the case of John Malcolm of Boston—the most famous victim of tarring and feathering\, but not the only one. \nPresented in partnership with the Beaufort County 250 Committee. \nLee Wilwerding is the former president of the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head Board of Directors. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Historic Tour of Stoney-Baynard Ruins with Rich Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Rich Thomas gives us the Revolutionary history of this fascinating place. Please be advised that the ruins are in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island and there is an entrance fee at the gate. Please allow for extra time to get through the gate. \nOn land purchased in 1776 by Irish immigrant and privateer\, Captain John Stoney\, the only fully tabby mansion ever built on Hilton Head was erected beginning in 1793. Stoney became a sea island cotton planter after the war and in the War of 1812\, commanded two privateering vessels out of his land on Broad Creek.  After the War he lived a life fishing and hunting while his sons ran the cotton factorage business he had founded. In receivership due to his sons’ flamboyant lifestyle\, the land and house were sold to William Baynard by the Bank of Charleston in 1845 by the Bank of Charleston for $10\,000. \nRegister for the tour here.
